MeM at Cornell University is geared towards engineers who want to stay in a technological environment, but advance to managerial roles. Through an in-depth, real-world group design project, and course content in management science, project management, decision and risk analysis, information technology, finance and accounting, and organizational behaviour students gain the technical and managerial skills necessary to become effective engineering managers.
They also learn managerial skills to help organize and supervise people from different cultures and backgrounds to maximize teamwork, creativity, and productivity, and to do so in an environment of global awareness and concern for ethical issues. Students learn to identify problems, formulate and analyze models to understand them and interpret analysis results for managerial action.
Further, they learn to navigate this process with a broad, global perspective that considers the full range of technical, economic, environmental, social and other consequences over an appropriate time horizon. While critically important to the success of engineering managers, many of these skills, the managerial and systems analysis abilities in particular, are not emphasized in traditional engineering curricula.

We ask you to submit a technical writing sample that demonstrates your ability to synthesize and communicate quantitative information. The writing sample should be no more than 5,000 words and can include figures. Acceptable documents include but are not limited to a technical analysis, project report, written review of technical material, an internal company report, white paper, published article, and projects/reports from a previous Engineering course. The technical writing sample should have been written in the past 3 years. If you were a coauthor, provide an introductory paragraph that specifically highlights your role and contribution.
If you or your employer have concerns about confidential material, you can choose to redact portions of the document containing sensitive information or data. You can also write a brief critical review of the work in question that omits any confidential material or data. If portions of the document are removed, we respectfully request that the submission is coherent and still allows the Admissions Team to make an informed decision about the candidate.
The technical writing sample is distinct from the Statement of Purpose (also called the Personal Statement). The Statement of Purpose helps the admissions committee understand your academic objectives and determine if you are a good match for the program you are applying to. The goal of this document is to impress upon the admissions committee that you have solid background and experience, and that you have the potential to be successful in graduate study. The Statement of Purpose is also a place, if necessary, to address any blemishes, gaps, or weaknesses in your academic record. In these situations, be honest but brief. Focus on how you overcame obstacles, remained persistent in the pursuit of your goals and showed resilience. Share what you learned from the particular experience, and how it led you to become a better scholar or person.
Lester B. Knight believed that leaders in the engineering profession require a strong foundation in business, and that leaders in business benefit from a strong foundation in engineering. The Lester B. Knight Scholarship is designed to assist and encourage top students to earn M.Eng. and MBA degrees at Cornell. The scholarship is the result of a generous gift by Mr. Knight and the continuing support of his family. Students do not need to pursue an MBA beyond the M.Eng. to be eligible and international students can apply.
The Knight Fellowship can provide up to $60,000 in tuition support. Knight Scholars enrolled as on-campus students in the M.Eng. degree program receive a $15,000 tuition award per semester for up to two semesters. Upon completion of the M.Eng. degree, an additional $30,000 is available to Knight Scholars who go on for an MBA at the Johnson School.

To be eligible, prospective program applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents and identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Native Alaskan, Native Hawaiian, and/or Native Pacific Islander.

COVID-19 has disrupted the ability of applicants in countries worldwide to take in-person English language proficiency exams. Both IELTS and ETS are providing at-home testing solutions in most countries. If a safe in-person option is not available for you, you may submit results from the IELTS Indicator, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, or the TOEFL ITP Plus for China. We are not accepting any other English Language Proficiency exams at this time (e.g. Pearson, Duolingo DET, etc.).
International students are eligible for the Knight Fellowship and merit-based graderships. We are a professional program with a limited number of partial scholarships. Most students are self-funded.
