Introduction to MeM at NC State University

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree deepens your critical analytical, science and engineering talents — Think. It also broadens your crucial management skills — Lead. NC State’s Master of Engineering Management degree provides you the skills necessary to manage and succeed in today’s complex technical environments.

The MEM prepares students for the challenges of solving real-world problems. At the heart of the MEM curriculum is the practicum, a learning experience that gives students the opportunity to conduct actual projects with our industry partners.

The practicum spans four months and finishes with an executive-level report and presentation to you, our sponsor. Students work to understand and solve your business problem under confidentiality agreements and the results are your sole property. The project is managed by the program and there is no sponsorship fee.

Because the Master of Engineering Management program is a professional degree, not a research degree, you will likely have to pay your own tuition costs. This arrangement is similar to other professional programs in different fields like management (MBA degree), law (JD degree), and medicine (MD degree).   • MEM programs prepare you for the engineering and technology industry. While many courses overlap with those in an MBA program, they are engineering-specific. For example, MEM examines how factors like staffing, finances and technical requirements can improve an engineering organization’s performance and how they impact the final product.
  • You will graduate with your MEM prepared to take on leadership roles within engineering, technology and scientific organizations. You will be a multi-talented professional who can connect technical engineering knowledge with organizational and people management skills.

Eligibility Criteria for at NC State University

General Requirements

  • minimum of 30 credit hours is required, of which 15 hours must be in the core curriculum
  • As part of the core curriculum, ISE 501 Intro to Operations Research is required
  • To fulfill the rest of the 15 hours, you must select one course from each of the following four categories:
    • Quantitative literacy
    • Organizational communication and leadership
    • Project management
    • Financial aptitude

Statistics Requirements

The following courses are provided by the Statistics Department as options for the MEM program.

  • ST 513 Statistics for Management I
  • ST 515 Experimental Statistics for Engineers
  • ST 516 Experimental Statistics for Engineers II
  • ST 517 Applied Statistical Methods I
  • ST 518 Applied Statistical methods II

Of these courses, ST 516 and ST 517 have prerequisites. Often, ST 516’s prerequisite of ST 515 is waived frequently, especially for students who have taken an undergraduate probability and statistics course. For ST 517, the only prerequisite is the undergraduate MA 241 Calculus II or equivalent. The other courses simply require graduate standing.

The scholarships listed below are generally awarded annually, but availability and amount may vary from year to year depending on availability of funds. To apply for all COE and ISE scholarships, simply fill out the online COE Scholarship Application.

  • Alpha Pi Mu/Kenneth D. Franklin Outstanding Sophomore Award

The Alpha Pi Mu/Kenneth D. Franklin Outstanding Sophomore Award was created in 2006 by Kenneth D. and Wanda B. Franklin to recognize the No. 1 ranked sophomore in ISE with the scholarship and award. Mr. Franklin graduated from NC State in 1971 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He received the first Alpha Pi Mu Outstanding Sophomore Award. 

  • Robert F. and Romaine S. Angel Scholarship

The Robert F. and Romaine S. Angel Endowed Scholarship was created by Stephen F. and Lori Angel to benefit engineering students who demonstrate academic merit. Angel received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from NC State in 1977.

  • Worley H. and Callie Anne Clark Scholarship

The Worley “H” and Callie Anne Clark Scholarship Endowment in Sales Engineering was established in 1997. The Clarks created this scholarship to benefit engineering students who demonstrate academic merit. Clark is an ISE alumnus who received his BSIE degree in 1956.

  • Robert G. Carson, Jr. Scholarship

The Robert G. Carson, Jr. Scholarship was established in honor of Robert G. and Elizabeth W. Carson. This scholarship was created to benefit engineering students who demonstrate academic merit. Carson served as the ISE Department Head from 1955 to 1957.

  • Hugh M. Duncan Scholarship

The Hugh M. Duncan Endowed Scholarship was established on December 10, 1997. Duncan created this scholarship to benefit ISE students who demonstrate academic merit. He is an ISE alumnus who received his BSIE degree in 1955.

  • Edward P. Fitts Scholarship

The Edward P. Fitts Endowed Scholarship in Industrial Engineering was established on June 23, 1999. Fitts created this scholarship to benefit ISE students based on academic merit. He is an ISE alumnus who received his BSIE degree in 1961.

  • Kenneth D. and Wanda B. Franklin ISE Merit Scholarship Endowment

The Kenneth D. and Wanda B. Franklin ISE Merit Scholarship Endowment was established in 2006 to benefit an ISE student in their junior/senior year who is the recipient of the Alpha Pi Mu/Kenneth D. Franklin Outstanding Sophomore Award, demonstrates merit and financial need and is a resident of North Carolina.

The program consists of 10 courses totaling 30 credit hours.  Five courses are in the core and five are in your chosen concentration. There is no need to decide on a concentration immediately.
