Introduction to MeM at MIT

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Master of Engineering Management (MEM) programme is a graduate-level degree programme created to give students a thorough education in engineering management as well as a solid basis in technical engineering expertise.

The programme targets students who have earned an undergraduate degree in engineering or a closely related subject and aspire to seek leadership positions in engineering and technology-based enterprises. A highly multidisciplinary curriculum combining engineering, business, and management courses is available through MIT’s MEM programme.

These subjects include project management, entrepreneurship, financial management, leadership, and innovation, and students are exposed to a wide range of issues in these areas. Eligibility Criteria for MeM at MIT

To qualify for the SDM master’s program, candidates must either:

  • Hold a B.S. degree in engineering, science, or technology, and have five or more years of professional technical experience with increasing responsibility; or
  • Hold an M.S. degree in engineering, science, or technology, and have three or more years of professional experience in a technical field, including some leadership experience

In addition, candidates should have experience contributing to a product or system development initiative and working with or leading groups.

Each year, System Design & Management (SDM) enrolls an elite group of 50 to 55 high-potential, mid-career professionals who represent diverse academic and professional backgrounds. These individuals share two common goals: they want to be systems thinkers and they want to lead. Successful SDM candidates also demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership potential
  • Systems thinking capability
  • A propensity to excel in complex engineering and management situations

Electronic copies of official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions from which you have received a degree(s) or performed graduate work must be uploaded using our online application form. Uploads may be in the form of a single- or multi-page PDF, or individual JPEG or TIFF image files. (Transcripts must be in English. Transcripts from international (non-US) institutions must be in English and certified.)

Leadership Essay

Leadership Essay:  A short essay that answers one of the following questions. (limit 300 words)

  • Please describe a specific experience you have had of working in and leading teams. Include any specific challenges you have faced.
  • Please provide an example of how you’ve demonstrated leadership skills. Please provide detail about the specific experience(s) and the results.

While Writing

  • Grab your reader’s attention: Start your essay with something that will grab the reader’s attention such as a personal anecdote, questions, or engaging depiction of a scene. Avoid starting things off with common phrases such as “I was born in…” or “I have always wanted to…” Consider the experiences that have shaped you or your career decision, and delve into them with a creative hook.
  • Write well: Your essay is a sample of your writing abilities, so it’s important to convey your thoughts clearly and effectively. Be succinct—you don’t need to write out your full autobiography or resume in prose. Exclude anything that doesn’t support your thesis. Gentle humor is okay, but don’t overdo it. Also, don’t make things up! Be honest about your experiences.
  • End strong: End your essay with a conclusion that refers back to the lead and restates your thesis. This helps unify your essay as a whole, connecting your detailed experiences back to the reason you are writing this essay in the first place—to show your qualifications for your graduate program of choice.

Final Touches

  • Use resources: The MIT Communication Labs have a CommKit that collects all of the Comm Lab resources relevant to the grad application process, including recommendation letters & interviews
  • Revise: Give yourself enough time to step away from your draft. Return with a fresh pair of eyes to make your edits. Be realistic with yourself, not your harshest critic. Make a few rounds of revisions if you need.
  • Ask for help: Have your essay critiqued by friends, family, educators, and the MIT Writing and Communication Center or our Career Services staff.
  • Proofread: Read your essay out loud or even record yourself and listen to the recording, to help you catch mistakes or poor phrasing you may have missed when reading to yourself. Also, don’t rely exclusively on your computer to check your spelling.

You are eligible to apply if you have earned a Bachelor of Science in a similar science discipline, but you may be at a disadvantage compared to engineering majors who have applied. Please thoroughly review the requirements of the program in the MSME Graduate Handbook to help you decide if you are prepared for our program.

 Yes. Students with a BS degree are eligible to apply to the PhD program.

You can enter all types of work experience in the Education and Experience section as well as detailing these experiences on your CV (Resumé).

MIT Graduate Admissions does not accept Duolingo English Test scores to meet the language proficiency requirement. Applicants must submit official scores from the IELTS Academic exam, TOEFL iBT exam, or the C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency exams from Cambridge English. (Please note that the Cambridge English Qualification exams are only accepted by select departments, not all.)

However, all offers of admissions do come with certain conditions, such as immigration requirements, satisfactory undergraduate degree completion, or the provision of official documents, such as transcripts, for verification.
