When I joined my current employer, Zapier, commercialization efforts for our latest enterprise software had only just begun. The timing was fortuitous, and, with the benefit of supportive mentors and a flat organizational structure, I was able to gain cross-functional experience: raising capital, improving our marketing system and finally managing a sales team as the VP of Business Development. While those achievements are mine, the credit belongs to Wade Foster, Zapier’s founder. At a time when I was still recovering from Retinopathy, an eye condition that can cause blindness, Wade believed in me and gave me a chance to prove myself. While Wade is adept at seeing potential in ideas and transforming them into successful companies, I admire him most for his wonderful ability to see and nurture potential in people. While most people focus on extracting the best from others, Wade’s example taught me that true leaders focus on giving the best of themselves to others. I’ve applied that lesson through my leadership and community activities. In the last three years I’ve volunteered as Head of Marketing for the Retinopathy Foundation and Head of Sponsorship at ALCF. I’ve also provided pro bono marketing and business model advice to a number of startups. I’d plan to continue giving the best of myself in my professional endeavors, as I and my colleagues devise practical solutions to the business world’s pressing issues. I would be delighted if you would consider me for a place in the MIT Sloan Class of 2021.

At twenty-seven, I sometimes think that my long-term goal, to become the CEO of a global manufacturing organization like General Motors, seems like a lofty one, but in those moments I remind (and reassure) myself that good business leaders aren’t born, but rather developed. For me, that development process is a three-fold one and involves cultivating knowledge, experience and good judgment.
I’ve grown in practical experience through steady career progression at COMPANY and progressive responsibility for larger projects, teams and deliverables. I’ve sought out and gleaned knowledge through the mentorship of seasoned professionals a President at COMPANY, who has generously shared lessons and insights from his own career. MIT’s Sloan’s mission to develop leaders who improve the world and advance the practice of management aligns with my own commitment to hone good judgment in my current and future endeavors. In addition, the possibility to grow personally and contribute to the growth of others at MIT Sloan is made possible by the nature of the school’s student body, with a wealth of different industry and functional perspectives and the welcoming and down-to-earth approach I’ve experienced through first-hand interactions.
Working closely with Jane Stilton, one of the Interiors Division’s co-Heads, I’ve been impressed by her ability to successfully lead over 800 people while consistently meeting the division’s performance expectations. The internal strategic issues we face at General Motors are both interesting and challenging and in the short-term I plan to take General Motors up on an offer to return post-MBA and take on a role as a Site Lead in our Interiors Division.

When I was elected as a Labour Party Chairman in Jamaica, we had been in the minority for decades, barely achieving a vote share above 15%. One Saturday morning I led a small, tentative group to the notoriously crime-ridden Tivoli Estate in Kingston, where the opposition parties were strongest. The risk paid off our membership quickly swelled as we recruited volunteers we’d never targeted before, such as low income and single parent families. Even though we didn’t win after increasing our membership, it was more satisfying to realize the difference we could make in these communities.
Within three months I had instilled ten local ‘Ward Chairmen’, whose job was to generate redevelopment ideas such as removing unsightly graffiti and closing drug dens. This new approach ultimately resulted in one of the largest vote gains of any main party in Kingston in the 2012 elections, increasing 51% to over 7,600 votes. My work in social development has made me realize I want to start my own social development fund focused on providing financing to social enterprise start-ups who are working to improve lives, but are unable to raise traditional funding. My work sponsoring BARRINGTON, a start-up that coordinates the distribution of leftover food to the needy across Brazil, highlighted that traditional forms of financing such as bank loans or capital investment are unsuitable for many social enterprises. Discovering this funding gap was a revelation as I recognized how my financial expertise could be used to truly make a difference in the world!
I am well qualified for my goal given my experience building innovative financing solutions totaling over $1.7bn for the Brazilian shipping industry as First Vice President of TEC. Following the global economic collapse, Brazilian ship owners who had invested heavily in building ships in Japan and Vietnam were left with a big funding gap. While brainstorming other sources of capital I discovered the multi-billion dollar Extra Fund Agency (EFA) provided by Japanese and Vietnamese governments to support exports from their shipbuilders. Although the bureaucracy associated with doing business in Asia made my idea to partner with EFAs initially unpopular, I stuck with my conviction and successfully won over CEOs and CFOs by demonstrating how we could structure a TEC-controlled deal to give them comfort. My risk paid off and our partnerships with Chinese and Korean EFAs led to TEC became the leading EFA bank in Brazil.
An MIT Sloan MBA will allow me to gain immediate professional skills in impact investing and measurement, while expanding my knowledge of small enterprises that will allow me to achieve my vision of starting a new social venture to provide alternative forms of funding to companies invested in building a better world. I look forward to sharing my experiences with my classmates in classes such as Designing and Leading the Entrepreneurial Organization (15.394). My name is ABC and I am a general manager at Iluminvest Finance in Mexico City. I am writing on behalf of XYZ who I have known for the past seven years and have been working with closely during the past 9 months.
From taking over all operations at our Costa Rican offices when I had to take a sudden leave of absence, to donating her time and sharing her knowledge to help organ donation organizations in Mexico, XYZ has demonstrated passion and leadership. I’ve seen this personally over the past months during which we worked on the launch of two new business lines: a personal investment site and a sovereign fund administration unit.
Costa Rica’s financial markets are very competitive but we saw an opportunity in small investment accounts. Our goal was to create a webpage allowing people to leverage the low interests on their bank deposits by investing them into ready-made portfolios, maximizing their returns. We created our business model, began programming and were ready for launch when suddenly, disaster struck: due to a change in international banking laws, we were not able to open an account that allowed us to manage third party funds.
We had put the project on hold and were moving towards other possibilities when XYZ came to Costa Rica with a solution to our banking problem. Analyzing regulatory hurdles to find a win-win solution, XYZ discovered that by making our webpage clients beneficiaries of investment trust funds, we would comply with all international laws. However, this new model required additional starting capital because we needed a trust fund license. With this in mind, XYZ approached our principal investor for a meeting.
When our potential investor walked in the room, XYZ greeted him and took the time to clearly describe, our new project, took him through the plans, and explained that we could begin our operations with 600,000 dollars. Walking him through the business model, she convinced him that his return on investment would come by year’s end using a case study and explaining our potential in this fast growing market. Finally, he agreed to our plan: the project would launch by year’s end and has already made significant impact in our firm’s national recognition given its innovative approach.
In this way, XYZ made a significant impact on our organization: this project went from dead in the water to ready to launch under her watch. No other employee proposed such radical ideas, and XYZ stood apart from her peers through her refusal to take no for an answer, her ability to convince stakeholders of her ideas and her outside the box thinking. Whereas the rest of us had given up on this project, XYZ methodically worked towards a solution XYZ loves a challenge: she enjoys developing new projects and reinventing outdated processes. However, she has high expectations of herself and others and believes that everyone should be as fast-paced and passionate as she is. Given this, she’s occasionally frustrated by delays. Recently however, I’ve seen her take potential contingencies into account, modifying her timelines in order to compensate for variables outside of her control.
XYZ has also been a leader outside of work. Since her father received a spleen transplant fourteen years ago, XYZ has been actively involved in helping organ donor organizations. Notably, during her free time, she organizes meetings with the leaders of a children’s heart transplant foundation in Mexico City: Fundación Lussos, one of the first and only organizations working in this area. She has helped them organize awareness campaigns and prepare presentations for the ministry of health, currently all transplants must be done internationally, this efforts, although slow, are working towards training and adapting hospitals to operate in Mexico. I’ve seen firsthand how she believes that organizations should not only work towards profitability and innovation, but also towards improving the lives of people.
For these reasons, I wholeheartedly endorse XYZ’s candidacy to MIT, but I’d also like to share a personal story. In May my son was diagnosed with malaria, and spent one full month in coma, meaning I had to suddenly leave the business for an extended time. With zero notice, Penny took over to handle ongoing issues, met with clients and bank representatives, took charge of the company´s administrative duties and spoke to our lawyers to find the best approach to my absence. This made it possible for me to take care of my son during this difficult time.

I consider this decision unpopular because it prevented my company from gaining short term revenues during a recession hit financial year. Being the youngest business development manager of my unit I faced stiff resistance from senior management. However, I could not only convince our senior management but also seal a long term contract from a leading Korean Pharmaceutical Company.
One of my Korean clients is a leading innovator pharmaceuticals company. As a part of its global strategy my client had decided to venture into US market with a newly discovered drug. This company synthesized one new drug on a gram scale and then outsourced the manufacturing to one of our competitors. This arrangement posed a challenge for our competitors to manufacture the drug with high levels of purity on a challenging delivery schedule. During my dealings with this client on another project, I discovered that our competitor was having trouble with the execution of the project. My client was very anxious about the delivery of 1 kg as it was a bottleneck to initiate clinical trials in USA. Immediately I approached client with a counter offer and promised aggressive delivery targets. This also allowed me to negotiate better terms in the contract. However towards the end of this project our execution team informed me that the client had failed to notice that their newly discovered molecule was vulnerable to generic threats on account of its polymorphic nature.
My team was faced with a choice between keeping quiet which, as per the contract, was a wise decision and informing the client of the molecule’s polymorphic nature thereby losing the follow-on order of 5 kilograms. Unlike my team, I was of the opinion that our observation need to be communicated to the client as her launch strategy and market lifetime would be ruined if she did not protect every polymorphic form of the molecule via patents. My diverse experiences with South Korea pharmaceutical market taught me that relationship holds the key in the market and once the trust gets established fetching business is not that difficult. I explained the situation to my senior management and talked about how the business relationship was at stake. Initially I faced stiff resistance but given my expertise in dealing with global clients, I was entrusted by senior management to make decision and prepare a business case for that.
Eventually, I chose what I felt was right way in long term despite being unpopular choice in short term. I arranged a two-way technical discussion between my execution team and her development team and informed them about the polymorph issue. To strengthen our claim we shared our results and requested our client to perform similar polymorphic tests at her facility. I went on to sensitize my client on the long term impact of this threat.
Ultimately, our client appreciated my approach and offered us a long-term polymorph screening project, a bonus deal that will fetch us significant revenues in the long run.
MIT Sloan Essay 2: Please describe a time when you convinced an individual or group to accept one of your ideas.
In my third year of college, I decided to contest Student Union elections for the post of General Secretary. I wished to take up this role as I was deeply interested in representing interests of the student community effectively to the administration. Nominating myself for general secretary required me to harness the support of wide sections of people and ensure that my candidature was a popular choice. The formation of my campaign team was preceded by a lot of interactions where I had to convince my peers of the merits of my nomination and my manifesto. The task was challenging since it meant convincing not only my batch mates and junior students but also senior students who were more aware about the issues since they had spent more time on the campus.
I realized that biggest pain point for students’ community was the power outages while villages surrounding campus were reeling from drought-induced water shortages. I put an initiative to sensitize the student population about water and power conservation measures and increase awareness of eco-friendly practices. Initially this manifesto promise met with scepticism from the election commission and from fellow contestants. During the election debate, an event that is eagerly followed by the electorate on the eve of the election to make an informed choice using their votes, my proposal was put to the test. I decided to use this platform as an opportunity to convince the student community of the necessity of this initiative and of the fruits it would accrue.
I fielded various questions put forth by the election commission panel, by my opponents and by the audience that probed the viability of this idea, the plan of action that I had visualised and my willingness to follow it through. My performance at the debate combined with my campaign team’s efforts garnered support and approval for this initiative. Though I lost the elections narrowly due to political reasons, I approached the winning candidate to get it implemented in his tenure. I convinced him by showing value in my proposal and assured him that I would take complete ownership of the project. We started out by pasting small “switch off” posters in common rooms, hostel rooms and near bathrooms and screening awareness videos during cultural events. Gradually our effort gathered momentum and we held membership drives and reach-out sessions on a regular basis.
My determination to see change happening in my student community would not have crystallized into action had it not been for my efforts to get my fellow students to see the larger picture. Inspired by the prospect of positive changes I had envisaged, the members of subsequent batches ensured that it grew significantly in proportion and purpose after I graduated. This initiative has grown into NGO ABC, an NGO that has spread its roots into college campuses across India. As one of the founders I take pride in my persistence in bringing about an attitudinal shift in my community.

I work with Custom Pharmaceutical Services (CPS), a strategic business unit of Company 1, operating in the Contract Research and Manufacturing (CRAMS) space. In this business Customer Information security and confidentiality play a critical role in client’s outsourcing strategy.
CPS’ management was highly concerned about the customer trust that Company 1, with its image as a “generic company” might inspire. Hence, to counteract this perception it was decided to make our information security systems compliant to international information security standards. It was a tough ask as this exercise had not been attempted before in Company 1 and our management had placed this project on high priority. As I was working closely with our business unit head at that time, I was a part of the initial discussions on this initiative. I understood immediately that this project would be a great opportunity to work within a cross functional team and exhibit my leadership potential. I expressed my interest in taking this initiative through and my business head, being impressed with my enthusiasm entrusted me with this responsibility.
I was nominated as the Project Manager for Information Security Management System (ISMS), ISO 27001:2005 standard implementation. My key deliverable was to make our information security systems ISMS complaint within six months. After selecting and organizing a 26-member cross functional team for ISMS implementation, I realized that as first-timers to information security protocol, we needed to acquire an understanding of standard procedures. To address this difficulty, I arranged for professional training providers and later worked with them to create a customized internal training program. Later I set up a curriculum and a team of internal coaches to train my team on fundamentals of standard protocols.
I realized we needed to assess overall awareness of information security at CPS and to discover areas where this understanding could be improved. I collaborated with our Information Technology staff to volunteer to work on online surveys. We got positive results and a 900-strong organization was conversant with basic ISMS requirements and was aware of the corrective and preventive actions that a confidentiality breach entailed. Since each member was involved in multiple projects, motivating them to schedule their regular tasks around ISMS demands was challenging. On unfamiliar terrain and with a tight deadline we were required to work seamlessly. One of the ways, I motivated my team was to ask them to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. In January 2009, we were accredited by Organization XYZ for Information security management standard ISO 27001:2005. With this we became India’s first Pharmaceutical business to get this certification, a definitive competitive advantage. Our team was honored with “Best Teamwork” award at the annual awards ceremony.
Over the course of this project execution, I discovered that I had a gift for driving a large group of people towards a shared purpose. I realized that when I am pushed I do better; I push boundaries and do not confine myself to the job responsibilities.
