Simon Fraser Beedie MBA Sample Essay – 1

Essay 1: Simon’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion has been long-standing and demonstrated by our diverse student profile. An essential part of our mission is to foster diversity of thought throughout our wide breadth of curricular and co-curricular activities in order to help develop students into global business leaders. In recognition of this, U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Simon as the most diverse MBA program among its top-50 business schools.

As a Simon student, how will you contribute to Simon’s pledge to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access? (250-500 words)

After that eventful summer break, during which an echocardiogram revealed a hole in my heart, I could not partake in physical activities. The weight gain changed everything; I was always picked last for any sport and regularly bullied. As a result, my confidence plummeted. However, this experience made me grow into the empathetic person I am today and become a voice for the disadvantaged.

In 2018, I was exposed to the reality of our society’s dark underbelly while researching juvenile delinquency as a potential topic for our annual play in college. After speaking to multiple individuals who had been through the system, we realized that the lack of counselling or psychological assistance and rampant abuse had plagued the system established to help reform these kids.

We poured our heart and soul as a theatre group into telling their story of emotional and physical struggle. We gave over 50 performances to expand our reach and received various awards and recognition from prominent theatre personalities for the production. We partnered with multiple charities and NGOs to spread awareness and donated most of our funds for that year to help further the cause.

Continuing further on this path, I enrolled as a Mental Wellness Advocate at Accenture. I assisted in implementing group counselling sessions for selected internal teams during the second wave of the pandemic. I encountered people struggling with uncertainty and loss and worked tirelessly towards extended this service as a crises support group with the help of my network from college.

I aim to continue working in this field during and after the MBA and utilize the knowledge I acquire during the MBA to make mental health services more accessible. I hope to engage with Simon’s Diversity and Inclusion Center of Excellence and leverage my network of practising psychologists and the lessons I learnt working as an advocate to motivate the larger Simon community to become an ally. Furthermore, I hope to work with the Simon Women in Business club to organize panel discussions and mentoring sessions with female leaders from different industries to understand the important skills we need to build to succeed as women.

Essay 2: Describe your short-term and long-term post-graduation goals.

  • Given the fluctuation of economic and industry hiring trends, identify a backup plan should your short-term goal not be immediately attainable.
  • How does your past education and experience support your career objectives?
  • Lastly, what aspects of your intended Simon Business School program make it a good choice for your graduate study? (250-500)

I have over four years of experience in corporate HR and consulting with Accenture. Over these years, I have gained valuable experience in recruitment, people mobility and workforce transformation, working with colleagues and stakeholders from across the globe.

My first role with Accenture was as an analyst in the recruitment team for the Operations unit, where I was managing candidate journey and people mobility for internal applicants. In this role, I also led 2 contract employees. Subsequently, I moved onto a Talent fulfillment advisor role where I was responsible for driving headcount planning conversations for 700+ employees in the Strategy Consulting vertical.

I’m now working as a human capital consulting analyst in the change management vertical, where I implement innovative solutions to help clients manage change within their organizations. My project responsibilities include creating an end-to-end change enablement plan to bring about a culture change and get the 80,000+ global employees to switch from a legacy data storage system to a cloud-based system.

In the short term, post-MBA, I wish to pursue further on this path and delve deeper into the field of human capital consulting at firms such as Deloitte and Accenture in their human capital and change offerings verticals. I aspire to gradually climb up the ranks to become a human capital strategy leader with a pervasive understanding of concepts such as organizational design, future of work and human-centered change. If, however, I am unable to secure a position in my desired field, I will be open to exploring roles as a transformational change professional or organizational development specialist in industry firms like Shell, Salesforce etc.

I have learned that top consulting firms, such as Deloitte, Accenture etc., require an advanced business education along with past client-facing expertise in HR transformation or change-related projects, exemplary leadership potential and an international outlook. An MBA will help me bridge my experience with a holistic and pervasive understanding of business fundamentals.

After extensive research, I’ve realized that Simon is the best fit for my somewhat niche goals. It enables developing a deeper understanding of subjects such as finance and economics through a robust curriculum. Courses such as Negotiation Theory and Practice, Leading Organizational Change, HR Strategy and Pricing will help me build a strong foundation for my consulting career. Furthermore, the various clubs such as Consulting club, Women in Business and Career Action Team will help me make meaningful connections with individuals with varied career paths.

However, what truly separates Simon from other schools is the focus on experiential learning. The International Immersion, especially in Switzerland, will help me develop an international outlook while fine-tuning my analytical knowledge. Furthermore, the Vision Consulting project will help me enhance my ability to work effectively in teams to solve complex problems.

The focus on experiential learning and opportunities to build a lasting network make Simon the perfect launchpad for the next phase of my career.
