Eligibility Criteria for Vanderbilt School MS in Finance

The ideal candidate has earned at least a 4-year U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a top-quality college or university. We seek students who have taken a demanding course load in any field of study and have a consistent record of high performance.

Although most incoming students come to Vanderbilt immediately after completing their undergraduate degree, they find that professional finance exposure enables them to understand new concepts more fully and apply them more quickly.

Please do not send official transcripts unless you have been asked to do so. Candidates are responsible for requesting that the AWA essay be reported to Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management.

Candidates with a 3.5 or higher GPA (for those who earned their undergrad degree at an institution using a 4.0 scale), may apply to have the GMAT or GRE requirement waived.

All MS Finance applicants are considered for merit-based scholarships. There is no separate scholarship application. Selection criteria include academic background, professional experiences, GPA, GMAT scores, letters of recommendation, essay, and interview. Scholarships cover partial tuition, and candidates will be notified of an award when given an offer of admission.

Diversity Scholarship—Women in Finance

These scholarships are awarded based on the degree to which an individual demonstrates how he or she has supported the academic, personal or professional advancement of women. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to women and girls via personal mentorship or community involvement.

Diversity Scholarship—Underrepresented Minorities in Finance

These scholarships are awarded based on the degree to which an individual demonstrates how he or she has supported the academic, personal or professional advancement of underrepresented minorities (individuals who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and are of African American, Native American, Hispanic American, or Pacific Island American descent).

Vanderbilt Accelerator® Alumni Scholarship

Each year, the Vanderbilt MSF program awards up to $5,000 in scholarship funding to participants of Vanderbilt’s Accelerator® Summer Business Immersion.

Specializations & Electives Offered

The Vanderbilt MS Finance program offers four specializations:

  • Brand Management: This specialization provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to develop and manage successful brands. Students will learn about consumer behavior, brand strategy, marketing communications, and new product development.
  • Corporate Finance: This specialization provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to make sound financial decisions for corporations. Students will learn about financial analysis, valuation, corporate governance, and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Human and Organizational Performance (HOP): This specialization provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to lead and manage people and organizations effectively. Students will learn about organizational behavior, human capital management, leadership, and change management.
  • Investment Management: This specialization provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to manage investment portfolios. Students will learn about portfolio theory, security analysis, risk management, and quantitative analysis.

Electives

In addition to the core curriculum and specialization courses, Vanderbilt MS Finance students can choose from a wide range of elective courses. Elective courses are offered in a variety of areas, including:

  • Accounting: Financial reporting, auditing, tax
  • Finance: Investments, derivatives, international finance
  • General Management: Business ethics, leadership, negotiation
  • Marketing: Consumer behavior, marketing strategy, digital marketing
  • Operations and Analytics: Supply chain management, business intelligence, data analytics 

FAQs About MIF

All MSF students are required to attend Orientation and complete on-campus course work prior to the start of the academic semester. Typically, MSF students report to campus at the beginning of August.

 

Yes, MSF students can apply to the Vanderbilt MBA program. The admissions standards for the MBA program are different and generally require three to five years of work experience. If you are admitted to the MBA program, some of the MSF course credits can be used to satisfy MBA graduation requirements.

 

You will be asked to pay the application fee by credit card when submitting your online application.

 
Although they do not require students to have a significant level of quantitative training, it is expected that students will have completed one year of calculus, as well as at least one course in statistics. They do not require prior course work in finance. It is helpful to have taken an introduction to economics course to help you understand the theory of economic principles.

 

 
They do not require prior full-time work experience for MSF as it is considered a pre-experience program. However, competitive applicants will have at least one or more internships that are applicable to pursuing a full-time role in finance.
