Data has changed the way businesses make decisions. More than ever organizations need data-savvy leaders with strategies and approaches informed by data. MS in Business Analytics is an accelerated, highly selective*, interdisciplinary, and industry-relevant program that teaches both the analytical mindset and the cutting-edge technical skills needed for success in today’s data analytics marketplace. Since launching in 2016, it has become established as one of the most innovative academic programs in the Business Analytics field and is led by some of the world’s best instructors.
This 10-month in-person program offers students an incredible opportunity to advance their professional careers in the fast-growing data analytics field. This comprehensive program encompasses statistics, machine learning, econometrics, marketing analytics, and data management. Students also work collaboratively on real-world industry projects, providing them valuable experience working for a client in a team. Their emphasis on advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, data, communication, and cloud computing means students learn to ask the right questions to create actionable intelligence.
Here’s a breakdown of the program’s key features:
Business Analytics Advisory Board (BAAB): The MSBA program is backed by the Business Analytics Advisory Board (BAAB), comprising influential industry executives from companies like Google, Oracle, Tesla, and Netflix. Led by Rich Clayton, VP of Business Analytics at Oracle, the BAAB convenes 2-3 times annually to ensure the program’s curriculum aligns with current industry demands. This ensures that students remain at the forefront of marketplace trends, with an annual Analytics Forum sponsored by the MSBA program.
Cal Poly’s Business Analytics Agency: The program’s Business Analytics Agency connects MSBA students with Collaborative Industry Projects, serving as their official graduate degree Culminating Experience. The agency is overseen by a team of instructors from Information Systems, Statistics, and Marketing. It collaborates with the Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), offering AWS-certified instruction, cloud-based tools, and practical learning experiences. Students have the opportunity to work with various organizations, including corporate, public sector, and international entities like AT&T, Oracle, and the World Bank. These projects involve tackling key challenges, using proprietary datasets, and delivering value to these organizations.
Oracle Visit: The program boasts excellent job placement for its graduates. Employers highly value the MSBA degree as the primary qualification for data science applied to the business domain, consistently ranking it among the top three highest paid professions for those holding master’s degrees. Cal Poly’s MSBA program has been recognized as a Top 10 MSBA program. Graduates can tap into a well-established MSBA alumni network, with over 100 alumni on the LinkedIn network since 2015. As a result, MSBA students consistently secure premium job placements at esteemed companies, including Google, Oracle, Deloitte, Booz Allen Hamilton, PwC, Capital One, T-Mobile, Capgemini, Workday, Neustar, and the NFL.

Prior to the program start date, an applicant must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association. The program emphasizes that prospective applicants meet this fundamental requirement.
In terms of undergraduate grade point average (GPA), a minimum of 2.5 on a 4.0 U.S.A. scale is the baseline requirement. It’s worth noting that the program places particular emphasis on the last 90 quarter units (60 semester units) of an applicant’s academic history. However, potential applicants should be aware that meeting the minimum GPA requirement may not be sufficient for admission. The program is highly competitive, and most successful applicants typically have a GPA exceeding 3.0.
In regard to coursework prerequisites, applicants must have successfully completed at least one college-level course in calculus and two college-level courses in statistics. These statistics prerequisites can be satisfied with courses in statistics, probability, or econometrics. It’s important to highlight that courses with the term “analytics” in their title can also fulfill the statistics requirement as long as they primarily focus on statistical content.
Additionally, applicants are expected to possess a working knowledge of linear algebra. For those who do not meet this requirement, the program offers a short workshop in linear algebra that must be successfully completed before the program’s start date.
International students applying to the program need to demonstrate English proficiency. They are required to submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) taken within the last two years. The minimum acceptable scores are 80 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS. It’s important to note that competitive applicants often surpass these minimum scores.
Furthermore, Cal Poly has temporarily expanded its English proficiency score acceptance policy to include scores from Duolingo. Both undergraduate and graduate students who are obligated to prove English proficiency can choose to submit Duolingo scores, in addition to TOEFL or IELTS scores if available. For Duolingo, a score of 115 meets Cal Poly’s current English proficiency standard. This provision provides applicants with an alternative means of demonstrating their English language capabilities.
The application is completed and submitted via the Cal State Apply web site. A non-refundable fee of $70 (USD) is required.
