Business Analytics Advisory Board (BAAB): The MSBA program is backed by the Business Analytics Advisory Board (BAAB), comprising influential industry executives from companies like Google, Oracle, Tesla, and Netflix. Led by Rich Clayton, VP of Business Analytics at Oracle, the BAAB convenes 2-3 times annually to ensure the program’s curriculum aligns with current industry demands. Cal Poly’s Business Analytics Agency: The program’s Business Analytics Agency connects MSBA students with Collaborative Industry Projects, serving as their official graduate degree Culminating Experience. The agency is overseen by a team of instructors from Information Systems, Statistics, and Marketing. Prior to the program start date, an applicant must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association. The program emphasizes that prospective applicants meet this fundamental requirement.
In terms of undergraduate grade point average (GPA), a minimum of 2.5 on a 4.0 U.S.A. scale is the baseline requirement. It’s worth noting that the program places particular emphasis on the last 90 quarter units (60 semester units) of an applicant’s academic history. However, potential applicants should be aware that meeting the minimum GPA requirement may not be sufficient for admission. The program is highly competitive, and most successful applicants typically have a GPA exceeding 3.0.
In regard to coursework prerequisites, applicants must have successfully completed at least one college-level course in calculus and two college-level courses in statistics. These statistics prerequisites can be satisfied with courses in statistics, probability, or econometrics. It’s important to highlight that courses with the term “analytics” in their title can also fulfill the statistics requirement as long as they primarily focus on statistical content.
Additionally, applicants are expected to possess a working knowledge of linear algebra. For those who do not meet this requirement, the program offers a short workshop in linear algebra that must be successfully completed before the program’s start date.
International students applying to the program need to demonstrate English proficiency. They are required to submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) taken within the last two years. The minimum acceptable scores are 80 on the TOEFL or 6.5 on the IELTS. It’s important to note that competitive applicants often surpass these minimum scores.
Furthermore, Cal Poly has temporarily expanded its English proficiency score acceptance policy to include scores from Duolingo. Both undergraduate and graduate students who are obligated to prove English proficiency can choose to submit Duolingo scores, in addition to TOEFL or IELTS scores if available. For Duolingo, a score of 115 meets Cal Poly’s current English proficiency standard. This provision provides applicants with an alternative means of demonstrating their English language capabilities.
The application is completed and submitted via the Cal State Apply web site. A non-refundable fee of $70 (USD) is required.
