What is a good GMAT score for IESE MBA?

Short Answer – The average GMAT score at IESE is 690 for the last entering class. If you score above 690, you have a fair shot and you will receive an encouraging response to your profile evaluation from the admission committee.

Long Answer – There is no such thing as a safe score, higher is always better. In our years of consulting experience, we have seen our clients with 640 getting selected into top schools like INSEAD and on the other hand, someone with a 770 getting rejected too. A good benchmark that we advise all our clients to beat is the average GMAT score of the last entering class as mentioned in the Class profile published every year. Scoring above the average gets you a fair shot;

“The higher your score, the better is it for your interview or admission chance.”

If you plan to apply with a score that is below the average, then you are starting a fight with one hand tied behind your back or, let’s say, you are starting a few yards behind your competitors. You can definitely catch up in other sections of the application by writing outstanding essays or performing really well in an interview later. But it is always nice to start ahead of the competitor. A higher GMAT score helps one gain a competitive advantage.

“What if you are from the over represented Indian or Asian Pool?”

The over-represented candidate pool of Indian or Chinese applicants usually goes through a rigorous preparation process for GMAT, with a lot of Indian applicants scoring quite high. Hence, the overall competition and the Average score for this diaspora goes up by a few notches. That is why we recommend candidates within the most over-represented profiles to shoot at least 20 points higher than the school’s class profile average.

FAQs about IESE

IESE’s MBA is a full-time 15- or 19-month program that has a general management focus with a strong emphasis on global business, entrepreneurship and ethics. The program is offered at IESE’s world-class campus in Barcelona, with elective modules offered in New York, Sao Paulo, Shanghai and Kenya.

The program takes place on the school’s main campus in Barcelona.

The program stands out for its strong international character, with students who hail from more than 60 countries and faculty members who reflect 27 different nationalities. It also offers a unique bilingual dimension (English/Spanish). IESE students accepted into the program typically have 5 years of work experience on average, speak more than one language and are seeking careers in global business or to start their own companies.

The program has a comprehensive general management focus with the objective of preparing talented professionals to take on leadership roles in global organizations or start their own companies. In addition, students can concentrate on a particular area by taking electives, which are offered during the second year.

The first year of the program provides a solid business foundation with a focus on essentials such as economics, finance, operations, IT, global strategy and leading people in organizations. These areas are explored within a coherent, integrated framework.

During the second year of the program, students select from more than 130 electives covering diverse business areas. During the second year, they also carry out the Corporate Internship in the summer and have the opportunity to participate in the International Exchange Program and International Modules in New York City (USA), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Shanghai (China).

Yes, IESE employs a grade non-disclosure policy. The school only admits MBA candidates who have a proven track record of outstanding academic and professional achievement, as well as cross-cultural awareness and leadership potential. For this reason, recruiters are not permitted to ask students about grades during an interview.

Because the common language for everyone is English, we generally tell students that they will get out of the program what they put in. In other words, they can gain a strong base and tools to develop their language skills. However, we encourage students to make an effort to go beyond the required Spanish classes in order to improve and practice the language. By doing so, most students should obtain functional bilingualism and be prepared to take MBA courses in Spanish by their second year.
