Scheller MBA Essay 1:  Why an MBA and why Georgia Tech? Describe how your experiences, both professional and personal, have led you to the decision to pursue an MBA at Georgia Tech. Discuss your short- and long-term career goals and how Georgia Tech is best suited to help you achieve your goals. (350-word maximum)

I have more than 5 years of experience in leading and managing my family business – a jeans and apparel manufacturing company. Due to my father’s demise, I had to take over the business at the age of 25. Today, I manage a team of 70-100 employees and look after day to day operations. Now I want to pursue my MBA primarily because of the 2 overarching pain points.

First, we have taken over a business which has been following the same operations technique which was introduced by my grandfather. But compared to today’s standard, most of our technology and operations procedures are outdated. Also because of Covid-19, we faced new kinds of challenges including regular supply chain issues, and operations disruptions due to lockdowns. We had to take some losses due to poor supply chain planning. Therefore, to keep up with changing markets as well as trends, I want to bring some technological changes and operational efficiency in our business. That’s why I want to learn  more about other companies and how they dealt with the current changes.

Second, as a jeans manufacturer, my business’s growth opportunities and the risk are tied to one item.  In particular, it has been impacted by advances in E-commerce, and digital marketing. Our market position as well as our financial security is linked to only the Indian market. Now I want to expand my horizons beyond a single product manufacturing into multiple products and adopt direct to consumer selling methodologies to reduce our risks, improve margins and grow internationally.

As an engineering graduate, when I joined my business I was excited to learn under the guidance of my father but due to his untimely death I never received any mentoring to lead a business. I believe now is the right time for me to step out and pursue an MBA to upskill myself. As the next generation leader, I am seeking business education and mentoring to develop my own skills so that I can lead my business to new horizons and make my father proud.

I graduated from college in 2016 and excitedly joined my father in our family business. However fate had a different plan. While I was studying away from home, I never got to know when my father slipped into depression due to his gambling. Then in 2019, my father passed away leaving me alone with the business. When my father died the company had a loan of almost $1.75 million US and even our house was mortgaged to pay for business loans. The entire responsibility fell on my shoulders, and as I took hold of the business I saw the mountain of debt it had and how big our liabilities were.

I sold a few assets and increased the production of factories and literally burned the proverbial midnight oil to get my business on track. By early 2020, our profits started to increase which helped me pay off my house mortgage and save my house.

As fate would have it again, when my business was picking up COVID hit and the entire business came to a standstill. This is where I had to take support from my own employees to help with the business .In 2020-21 India was hit by a very severe covid-19 wave and all our business came to a standstill. We had more than $600,000 worth of inventory stuck.

With stuck inventory and no future orders, I dipped into my own savings to pay my 200 employees but in the next town hall meeting, I laid down the hard facts about the business and my own financial situation. As a leader I believe in open honest communication and I never wanted to cut people who have supported my father to build this business but our choice was either to take a deep salary cut or let go of the 40% employee base.

To my surprise almost all of my staff agreed to deep salary cuts and were even willing to work without salary for a few months. This is the first time where I as a leader was seeking help from my own employees and they all stood by me. This humane side of my employees truly showed me that the company is not built by its owners but it is built by the people who work there.

As business started opening, and as the orders started coming in my staff were true to their words. They worked overtime in completing purchase orders. As a result of our dedication and motivation we closed the year with a 35% year on year profitable growth.

Looking backward, I believe, it was my own version of baptism by fire in the business world. However, now I am glad that after 2 years of struggles we are in a really good position and I have managed to make myself and my mom proud by turning around this business.

Tech Scheller MBA Winning Sample Essays – 2

Scheller MBA Essay 1: Why an MBA and Why the Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business? Describe how your experience, both professional and personal, has led you to the decision to pursue an MBA at Georgia Tech. 500 words.

Over the past 4 years, I have been working in analytics within the fintech and healthcare industries. This experience has given me the opportunity to work with cross-functional teams, including marketing, product, and pricing based out of India, USA, Ukraine and Indonesia. One of the most significant accomplishments of my career has been helping to scale our active user base at Bright Money from 20k to 150k. This required me to use my analytical skills to identify key growth opportunities and implement strategies to drive user acquisition. In addition to scaling Bright’s user base, I have also played a crucial role in improving customer retention at Acko from 63% to 79%. This has involved analyzing customer data to understand their needs and preferences, and then implementing targeted retention campaigns to keep them engaged and loyal to our brand. Overall, my experience in analytics has been invaluable in helping me develop a deep understanding of data-driven business strategy.

To grow in my career, I want to transition from data analytics to a product management role. Such a role will provide me the opportunity to own a product end to end and improve my strategic leadership skills.

To be a successful PM, I know that I need to develop a range of skills beyond my current understanding of analytics and marketing. By talking to current MBA students like Akhil Reddy (‘24) and Kalyan Gattem (‘23) I got a glimpse of Sheller’s unique and transformative student experience. With its strong tech focus, intimate batch size, and proximity to a tech hub like Atlanta, Scheller College of Business is the perfect place for me to hone my technical and leadership skills and achieve my goals.

Scheller MBA Essay 2: Discuss your short- and long-term career goals and how Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business is best suited to help you achieve your goals.

Post-MBA I aim to land a PM role at a big tech company like Amazon or Microsoft in the US. Having gained experience and knowledge of industry practices, I aspire to become the VP of product at a global tech company in the long run.

To achieve these goals, I need to supplement my current skill set with a good understanding of consumer behavior, product strategy, and product pricing. Scheller’s comprehensive curriculum and focused electives are well-suited to my learning needs. The course ‘Consumer Behavior’ will help me understand how to research and analyze consumer behavior, and effectively position and differentiate my products in the market. ‘Pricing Analytics and Revenue Management’ will help me make informed decisions about how to price my products to maximize their value and appeal to target customers. The Leadership Development Workshop will help me build consensus and resolve conflicts when working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Apart from the academic opportunities, I am excited to get involved in student clubs and activities. As a member of the Tech Club, I will organize visits to local tech companies and lead workshops on data science and programming. These experiences will provide me with leadership and communication skills and help build connections in the tech industry. Through my participation in the Marketing Club, I will contribute to the club by sharing my knowledge in data-driven digital marketing and collaborate with my peers to develop effective marketing strategies for case study competitions.

As someone who loves the energy and opportunities of big cities, I can’t wait to explore everything that Atlanta has to offer. The city is home to numerous Fortune 500 companies, making it a great place to further my career, and its diverse neighborhoods and green spaces provide plenty of opportunities to relax and enjoy the outdoors. I’m excited to immerse myself in all that Scheller has to offer and make the most of my time here.
