How do I ask for a recommendation letter?

Strategies and etiquette for requesting a letter, including how to approach potential recommenders:

Choose Wisely: Select recommenders who know you well and can speak to your skills and achievements in detail. Ideally, one should be your current supervisor. 

Set the Stage: Schedule a meeting or phone call to discuss your MBA goals. Briefly explain why you believe they’d be a strong recommender.

Provide Context: Share your resume, transcripts (if applicable), and any program-specific essays or requirements with your recommender; this helps them tailor the letter to highlight relevant skills and experiences.

Offer to Help: While you shouldn’t write the letter yourself, you can offer to provide a bulleted list of your key achievements and contributions to jog their memory. 

Be Respectful of Time: Give your recommenders a generous amount of time to write a thoughtful letter. After they agree to write the letter, follow up with a thank you note.
